I travel a lot and work literally from anywhere while “on the road.” And when I’m not traveling I work from home. But when it gets too quiet or lonely, I head out to work in various coffee shops and libraries. That’s one reason why I have added so many places in and around Greensboro, NC.

The Piedmont Triad area in North Caroline includes the cities Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. I live in Greensboro and spend a lot of time in various coffee shops, libraries, and co-working spaces across the Triad.

Quirky and totally awesome coffee shop. This place has several rooms including game rooms. Their coffee is really good, and they also have coffee drinks named after actors — my current favorites are the “Charlie Chaplin”, “Bill Murray” and the “Marlon Brando.”

This place hosts events in the evenings, and they also serve beer and wine. The patrons are an eclectic group including students from nearby UNCG, road warriors and nomads, people from the neighborhood (which warrants a post in itself), and many more.

It’s a great place to hang out at. And yes, it can get very busy and loud at times, but it’s never boring.

Indie bookstore meets coffee shop meets wine bar. This is an oasis! It’s a great place to hang out, has great food and coffee, and you’re surrounded by books! What more can one ask for?

This bookstore is located downtown Greensboro and the patrons are a cross-section of all the people in the city — freelancers, bookworms, writers, office workers on a quick coffee or lunch break, the occasional out-of-towner, and much more. There are several tables in the front, but they also have quieter areas in the back.

Scuppernong hosts many different events and it can get crowded at times, but it’s always worth visiting.

This is a small branch of the Greensboro Public Library. It’s a very nice and comfortable building, and, of course, it’s quiet. Although, at times it can get rather busy. The is especially true in afternoons when students and tutors come to study and do homework, and even more so on weekends when lots of families come to visit the Children’s and Young Adult’s  sections.
Overall, though, this is a great place to sit and work. There are large tables throughout the library and it’s usually quite easy to find a secluded corner where one can spread out.

A small, but great, coffee shop and typical student hang-out. It’s located right on the edge of the UNCG campus and students and professors come here for breaks, to eat, study, and just to hang out. And yes, that means it can get very busy at times.
The owners of this coffee shop are also coffee roasters, and the coffee is great. They also have gelato, pastries, paninis, and more. The food is ok:ish and not very expensive.

Coffee roaster, coffee shop, brunch place, wine bar, event place, all around awesome space. Krankies is many things and its character changes throughout the day and throughout the week. It can be super busy, packed and loud, but also almost empty and easy to get work done. In general it’s never boring.
Coffee is excellent and they have many small and medium-sized dishes to munch on. In short: you won’t go hungry here. As for getting work done — yes, one can work here, but it requires self-discipline as there are often many (welcome) distractions.

This place is smack downtown Winston-Salem on 4th Street and can get very crowded. And depending on time of day and day of week, it can be difficult to find parking. However, going there is usually worth the hassles. They have excellent coffee, pastries, and food, and you can sit and people-watch forever — in short: it’s a great place to work, relax, and just hang out.

It’s not a huge space, but in addition to small tables, there’s also a large “community table” and a counter along one of the large windows with lots of outlets. So it’s usually not too difficult to find some space to work.

As an interesting tidbit, Camino serves Krankies’ coffee, and, as far as I know, Krankies servers pastries from Camino.

Great coffee shop with lots of tables and even a community meeting space. They have a wide selection of coffees and teas, and the coffees come from various roasters in North Carolina. They also have an assortment of great cakes and really good homemade chocolates.

All in all, Twin City Hive is comfortable, and a great place to work and hang out. It’s located in the Brookstone section of Winston-Salem, a bit away from downtown.

First, this place has a water fountain inside! DeBeen Espresso has character, is very comfortable, and has many of tables. Their coffees and teas are great and they have scones, muffins, brownies, and much more. This place is a community in itself.
DeBeen is located in cluster of small buildings in one corner of a large intersection and is easy to miss. But that would be a mistake. This could easily be a “home away from home” — it’s a nice place to work, hang-out, read, or just be.
