I’ve taken my whole life on the road, reducing my permanent footprint to almost nothing, and working nearly 100% out of cafes as a startup CTO. I spend lots of time in Taiwan and Japan.

When I land in a new city, there’s nothing more helpful than a nice guide of places to work. It literally saves me days of searching around for the right “vibey” environment. I’d love to give back to remote workers, and to share my findings!

I’ve spent months living in Taipei, all of which has been working remotely out of coffee shops, and have had SO much fun discovering the city’s coffee culture. There are dozens of awesome places to get focused, and I’m looking forward to finding new ways to share them with the world.

On any given evening, Yaboo will be filled with local students, professionals and creatives writing in their notebooks and typing on their laptops. Lightning-fast internet, the comfortable and interesting ambiance, and the great coffee make this cafe a great place to hang out for several hours. The friendly and attentive staff can understand quite a bit of english, and there are two cats who roam freely (perhaps they own the place?). 12p – 12a, closed on Monday.

getmore lab is conveniently nestled about a block into the quiet neighborhood north of Daan Park. The owners have an obvious passion about coffee and coffee culture — going so far as to bring coffee grounds over, to entice you with beautiful aromas, before sitting down to meticulously attend to your pourover. The bookshelf is well-stocked with tomes on coffee and startups, and the jazz music they regularly play is just amazing. Desserts change regularly, and do not disappoint. Open 12p – 7p Thurs/Fri, 10a – 7p Sat/Sun.

Hidden on a small side-street a few blocks south of Dongmen MRT station, you can find this well-balanced combination of interesting decor, amazing coffee, mouth-watering desserts, and a focus-friendly atmosphere. Like a few other cafes in the area, there’s an expectation that you help keep this a quiet space. Small, colorful figurines are meticulously arranged all over the coffee bar, and they usually have an old movie (no sound) projected on one of the large walls. Open 1p – 11p Tues-Fri, 12p – 11p Sat-Sun.

In a neighborhood packed with work-friendly cafes, Forgood stands out by having some excellent real food options (try the quiche) and a surprisingly good selection of craft beers. This place gets a little crowded in the evening, and you may be asked to move to a different seat if a large group comes in, but the friendly staff, the food and drink options, and the great ambiance keep me coming back again and again.

In Taipei, cafes typically open at 12pm and stay open very late. Roaster family coffee is one of the few great options if you want to start your day at 8am. They are an importer of single-origin coffee beans, and have a huge selection of amazing options, which they serve in their seemly bottomless collection of china teacups. I love sitting at their picnic tables on their covered patio when it’s raining.

Costumice is nestled in the back in a neighborhood packed with cute shops and restaurants, and offers a broad beer and wine selection, great coffee, and rustic decor — all of which make it a favorite among local remote workers. This is a great spot anytime, but particularly when the weather is nice, due to the ample patio seating, and the many huge doors that open up to the neighborhood quiet street. Open noon to midnight, daily.

FabCafe has locations all over the world, all of which feature some sort of 3D-printing or CNC milling facility right within the cafe space. Taipei’s FabCafe offers great coffee and food, fast internet, ample patio space out back, and is located inside “1917 Creative Park” – a venue popular for public events and live performances. Particularly when there’s an event, it’s nice to be able to take a break from work and walk around to see what’s going on. Open 11am – 10pm daily.

This Coffee House is another great study-oriented cafe in the Yongkang st. neighborhood, and like the others it has great coffee and at least a couple of tasty dessert options, but what you’ll notice right away is that this one is QUIET. The environment is like that of a classroom where everyone is taking an exam. It’s a fantastic place to hang out when you’re looking for intense focus, and to be surrounded by people who are similarly focused.
